For the first time since 2009, the Highlanders accomplished two feats for the Varsity Football program: Heathwood collected their 5th win of the season, and defeated the Porter-Gaud Cyclones.
In a tough road environment, HH got off to a great start as Darius Bates forced a fumble on the Cyclones’ second possession — quickly followed by an Alex Lewis 13-yard touchdown run (Grayson Tanner PAT) for the 7-0 lead. Less than 10 seconds later, the Highlanders doubled their lead as Rondarius Porter forced, recovered, and returned a fumble on the ensuing kickoff for a score to push the lead to 14-0.
Both teams then traded touchdowns toward the end of the 1st quarter, as Lewis completed a near-perfect pass to Ronnie Porter from 24 yards out to push the lead to 21-7. Two P-G field goals late in the quarter led to the halftime score of 21-13.
A Highlander “fumble” on the opening drive of the second half, resulted in a Cyclone defense score to close the lead to 21-20, before Porter ran over several defenders on a 30-yard TD run to push the lead to 28-20. The Cyclones scored a late quarter touchdown and two-point conversion to tie the game at 28 heading into the 4th.
Ronnie Porter’s third touchdown of the night gave the Highlanders their final lead of the night with just under six minutes to play at 34-28, before the Highlander D took over to close it out. Rondarius Porter’s second fumble cause/recovery opened the quarter, before Az’hane Salaam collected his first two interceptions of the season in the final 3 minutes to put the game on ice.
Heathwood (5-2, 5-1) will now travel to Ben Lippen on Friday for a huge contest, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30PM.
