The Varsity Football team found themselves with a chance to win on 4th down in the first overtime on Friday night, and senior Grayson Tanner’s 21-yard FG propelled the Highlanders to their first State Quarterfinal win in 10 years, with a 3-0 victory over region rival Cardinal Newman!
In a true postseason battle, the Cardinal and Highlander defenses took center-stage for a November, cold-weather matchup of even teams over four quarters. In the overtime period, the Heathwood defense rose tall yet again, forcing the CN offense back 15 yards before disrupting the Cardinal 42-yard FG attempt to close out the period.
This set the stage for Tanner, and the execution team of snapper Walker Draffin and holder Nils Viehweger before the senior captain drilled the kick, and sparked the student section-storming celebration.
With the win, the #4 seed Highlanders move to 8-4 on the season, and will face #1 seed Hammond on Friday night at Edens Stadium, 7:30PM scheduled kickoff.
