The JV Boys Soccer team opened their regular season with a tough 4-1 loss at home against Gray Collegiate Academy on a rainy evening at Highlander Stadium.
The Highlanders, sporting a roster with only one player above middle-school age, competed with great technique, skill, and effort against the War Eagles, who featured only 9th-11th grade athletes. Heathwood came out of the gate with an early opportunity, putting a dangerous shot on frame inside 15 seconds, only to be turned away. However, GCA would get on board first with the first two goals in the half, taking a 2-0 lead late into the first half.
The JV Boys wouldn’t back down from the match though, and inside the final two minutes, pressured into the penalty area and won the PK, slotted home by 7th grader Max Hagood. Both teams would head into the half with the 2-1 scoreline. In the second half, Heathwood’s team continued their dominance in possession, creating chance after chance without being able to find the back of the net.
GCA’s size, strength, and speed proved to be too much, as the War Eagles found the net twice in the 2nd half for the 4-1 final.
The team will return to action on 3/13 as they host Ben Lippen.
