Highlanders News · Heathwood Hall Welcomes New Director of Athletics Eva Greenberg

From the Desk of Heathwood Hall Head of School Chris Hinchey:

I am excited to provide an update on the search for Heathwood Hall’s next Athletic Director.

Heathwood received applications from over forty highly qualified candidates, and with the assistance of Southern Teachers Agency and the Advisory Committee, we narrowed down the candidate pool to three finalists and hosted them each for a day and a half of on-campus interviews.

The Advisory Committee voted unanimously to extend an offer to Eva Greenberg, and I am excited to announce that she has accepted our offer and will begin her tenure as the Athletic Director on July 1, 2021. Eva is currently the Assistant Athletic Director at the Field School in Washington, DC (see biography to follow), and she will be joined in Columbia by her husband, Tom, and their 1-year-old daughter, Lena Willow Henry.

Eva impressed us with her deep knowledge about the management of an athletic department, her passionate belief in the role that athletics plays in the development of young people, her fiercely competitive personality, and the manner in which she articulated the value that exceptional coaches add to our student-athletes’ pursuit of excellence. Eva’s experiences also leave her well positioned to improve our middle school athletic program while simultaneously growing winning programs at the varsity level.

Of her choice to pursue a career in Athletic Administration, Eva said, “So many of the skills students learn through participating in athletics—teamwork, camaraderie, striving for something bigger than yourself—are incredibly valuable to their overall development as scholars and as people. I find it both inspiring and rewarding to see kids come into their own and find a place for themselves through sports.”

Eva learned a great deal about our school during the interview process, and she had this to say about her Heathwood visit: “When I came down to visit and met members of the Heathwood community, I was struck by how much everyone cared about the relationships between students and coaches. When those relationships are strong, special things can happen, and the fact that the Heathwood community recognizes that so clearly really stood out to me.”

I am also excited to announce that current Assistant Athletic Director Andrew Richardson is being promoted to Associate Athletic Director and Sports Information Director on July 1, 2021.  Andrew was also a finalist in the search, but withdrew his name from consideration in the days prior to the Advisory Committee’s deliberations.  Eva Greenberg and Andrew Richardson will make a formidable team, and I am excited about the future of our athletic program. Andrew’s work as our Sports Information Director (SID) has been transformational and his coaching and mentoring of our student-athletes is noteworthy.

I want to extend my gratitude and thanks to the members of the Advisory Committee for their diligent and conscientious efforts.  This group’s selfless service to Heathwood Hall was impressive: Rip Blackstone, Maria Genovese, Danny Lewis, Darnel Lewis, Maria Madden, W. D. Morris, Suzanne Nagy, George Scouten, JuLayne Shiflett, Willis Ware, and Brionna Zimmerman.

Eva Greenberg, her husband Tom, and their daughter Lena will be visiting Heathwood and Columbia again during the first week of March, and I look forward to introducing her to more members of our learning community.

Sincerely,

Chris Hinchey
