Highlanders News · Jeff Whalen to Return As Boys Basketball Coach in 2021-22

Dear Heathwood Community,

In a year during which so many of my letters have been about restrictions, cancellations of events, and alterations to the schedule, I am excited to be sharing good news.

After some productive conversations with Jeff Whalen over the last two months, he and I have decided that he will return to Heathwood Hall as our Varsity Boys Basketball Coach next year (2021-2022).

While the 2020-2021 school year will still be Jeff’s last year as Heathwood’s Athletic Director, he remains excited to work with current and future basketball players on the hardwood and lead the Heathwood Hall basketball program.  Jeff is an exceptional coach, and this year of starts and stops provided him with a chance to reflect on those endeavors which bring him the greatest reward and satisfaction.  Not surprisingly, coaching basketball and mentoring young people are at the top of his list.

Additionally, this COVID-scarred season is not the right time for Jeff to conclude his coaching career.  He has much left to offer. This arrangement will also allow Jeff the time to balance his love of coaching with his desire to spend more time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

The search for our new Athletic Director is progressing on schedule, and I look forward to sharing further news with you on that front in the weeks to come. It will also be beneficial to have Jeff Whalen close by and available while the school transitions to new leadership in the athletic department.  Jeff is a reservoir of knowledge, and his involvement will benefit our players and coaches, while his presence positions Heathwood for a prosperous future.

This is great news for the Heathwood Hall basketball program. It would not be hoops at Heathwood without Jeff on the sidelines, his wife Karen at the scorers’ table, and various combinations of the Whalen boys and their growing families in the bleachers. I’m thrilled that Jeff’s time at the helm of our boys basketball program is not over, and that our players will continue to benefit from his outstanding coaching and guidance.

Go Hall!
