Multiple Teams · 2019-20 Girls Basketball Program Information

Dear Parents and Lady Highlanders,

It’s almost basketball time at Heathwood Hall!  Basketball tryouts begin on Monday, November 4.  Below is the schedule for those tryouts, plus locations:
Tryouts for the JV (6th-9th graders are eligible) and Varsity teams (8th-12th graders are eligible) will be held on the following dates and times:

  • Monday, November 4 — Athletic Center, 4:30-6:00 p. m.
  • Tuesday, November 5 — Lower Gym, 4:30-6:00 p. m.
  • Wednesday, November 6 — Athletic Center, 4:30-6:00 p. m.

Both the JV and Varsity teams will be selected after tryouts on Wednesday, and both will have their first practices on Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Athletic Center (JV, 3:15-4:30; Varsity, 4:30-6:00 p. m.).

Tryouts for the Middle School Team (5th-8th graders are eligible) will be held on the following dates and times:

    • Monday, November 4 — Athletic Center, 3:15-4:30 p. m.
    • Tuesday, November 5 — Lower Gym, 3:15-4:30 p. m.
    • Wednesday, November 6 — Athletic Center, 3:15-4:30 p. m.
    • Thursday, November 7 — First Practice in the Athletic Center, 3:15-4:30 p. m.

The Middle School team will be selected after tryouts on Wednesday.  The Middle School team typically practices each day after school beginning at 3:15 p. m. and will have its first practice on Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Athletic Center, 3:15-4:30 p. m.

Remember that student-athletes must have all athletic forms turned in via FamilyID, which can be accessed through www.heathwood.org and then clicking on “Athletics.”  If your daughter participated in a Fall sport, then she must be registered for the Winter season.  When you register on Family ID, first make sure to type in “Heathwood Hall Winter 2019 Registration” and hit “Find.” Sign-up for the Winter sport, and then electronically sign the forms.  Then, all of the forms entered for the Fall will transfer over to the Winter.

Those trying out for this year’s teams will be evaluated on basketball skill, effort, cooperation, attitude, and fitness level.  Please understand that previous basketball experience does not guarantee any young lady a spot on one of this year’s teams.  Discuss this matter with your daughter, and together make a decision about her trying out.  I am grateful that our entire Heathwood coaching staff — Coach Dickerson (Varsity Asst. Coach), Coach Bri Davie (JV Head Coach), Coach Briana VanDenHeuvel (MS Head Coach), Coach Kelly Turbeville (MS Asst. Coach, and myself — will be working together with all of the girls at tryouts as well as the entire season.
If your daughter is chosen for one of our Heathwood teams, please know that each team will practice and play during the week and possibly on some weekends.  All student-athletes must be committed and dedicated.  Please avoid conflicts with other activities, such as music lessons, other sports teams, etc.  Consider the substantial amount of time that your daughter will have devote to basketball, if she participates in tryouts and makes the team.  Our overarching goal as a program is to provide a quality experience for each student-athlete.

Since only a limited number of players can be selected for each team, I would suggest that your daughter sign-up for a church or recreational team so she would have a place to play in case she does not make one of the Heathwood teams.  Please note that for any 5th and 6th grader not selected for the Middle School team, we will offer a 5th-6th grade developmental team for those interested.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  GO HALL!

Sincerely,

Coach Edwards
